Third Term Exam
Part one: Reading
1/ Comprehension / Interpretation: (08pts)
Read the text carefully, and then do the activities.
Text:

Astronomers believe that the expanding universe is the result of an enormous and powerful explosion called the big bang. The big bang theory may explain how the universe formed. The big bang theory states that the universe began to expand with the explosion of concentrated matter energy and has been expanding ever since. According to the theory, all the matter and energy in the universe was once concentrated into a single place. This place, of course, was extremely hot and dense. Then some 15 to 20 billion years ago, an explosion- the big bang- shot the concentrated matter and energy in all directions. This fastest moving matter traveled farthest away. Energy too, began moving away from the area of the big bang.
If the big bang is correct, the energy left from the big bang will be evenly spread throughout the universe. This energy is known as background radiation. And indeed, scientists have discovered that it is almost the same throughout the entire universe. This constant background radiation is one observation which supports the big bang theory.
After the initial big bang, the force of gravity began to affect the mater racing outward in every direction. Gravity is a force of attraction between objects. All objects have a gravitational attraction. This force of gravity began to pull matter into clumps.
At some time, the crump formed huge clusters of matter. The clumps became the galaxies of the universe. But even as the galaxies were forming, the matters inside them continued to race away from the area where the big bang occurred. And this is just what astronomers have discovered. All of the galaxies are speeding away from the center of the universe.

Activity 1: Say whether the following statements are true or false:
a) The universe was formed long before the Big Bang explosion.
b) The background radiation is the same throughout the whole universe.
c) All the galaxies are nearing the centre of the universe.

Activity 2: In which paragraph is it mentioned that:
a) Clumps were made because of matter which began to be pulled by the force of gravity.
b) All the matter and energy in the universe belonged to one area in the universe.

Activity 3: Answer the following questions according to the text:
a) What is the theory discussed in the text?
b) What if it is correct?
c) How are the galaxies formed?

Activity 4: Copy the title you think is the most appropriate:
a) Force of Gravity.
b) Big Bang Theory.
c) The Universe.

Activity 5: Who or what do the underlined words refer to in the text?
a) It (2nd§).
b) Which (1st§).
c) Them (4th§).
2/ Text Exploration: (07pts)

Vocabulary: Match words and their synonyms:
1. Enormous a- happened
2. Supports b-energy
3. Force c- giant
4. Occurred d-holds

Morphology: Divide the following words into roots and affixes:
enormous, extremely, concentrated, unexpected.
Prefix Root Suffix

Grammar: Combine the following statements using (comparison, unlike or whereas):
1. Mercury is 36.05 million miles far from the sun / Venus is 3666.17 million miles far from the sun.
2. It takes Earth 24 hours to go around the sun / it takes Pluto 6 days to go around the sun.
3. Stars give off light / planets give off no light.
4. There is no planet smaller than Pluto.

Sound System: Match pairs that rhyme:
1. Fastest a- in need.
2. Enormous b- solidarity
3. Indeed c- farthest.
4. Gravity d- numerous

Discourse: Re-order the following sentences to get a coherent passage:
1. This explosion is known as the Big Bang.
2. The exact size of the universe is unknown.
3. They believe this outward expansion is the result of a violent, powerful explosion that occurred about 15 to 20 billion years ago.
4. However, the astronomers believe that the universe is still expanding outwards.

Part two: Writing (05 pts)
Choose one of the two topics.
Topic one: Through your personal information, write a short paragraph in which you define and describe the solar system and its components.

Topic two: Using the following notes, write a short composition about the negative and the positive aspects of advertising?
• Create competition among companies.
• Provide people with new products.
• Cause stress and anxiety.
• Essential for business and consumers.
Good Luck
